When the accident happens

What to do first

1. Make sure you are safe

If someone is hurt, dial 9-1-1. When it is safe, get the vehicle out of traffic, switch on the hazard lights and keep everyone off the roadway.

2. Take notes

Jot down the year, make, model and licence plate of each vehicle involved, plus every driver's name, contact details, licence and insurer. Also get witnesses' contact information, take photos and record the point of impact.

3. Tow it if necessary

If your vehicle can no longer be driven, have it towed somewhere safe, such as the body shop of your choice or the Nissan Magog body shop.

Whether the claim is small or large, a few good habits from the start spare you plenty of hassle.

1. Let your insurer know

Report the accident as soon as you can. The insurer typically sends an appraiser to assess the damage, and can also explain the joint accident report (constat amiable), which helps document the facts.

2. Pick your body shop

Your insurer may recommend a shop, but it cannot force you to use it. You decide where and how your vehicle is repaired.

3. Find out about the parts

Ask what kind of parts will be used (original, remanufactured, aftermarket or used) and what your policy covers. Some policies make you pay the difference for original Nissan parts.
